first_imgThe Jubilee Float Parade set for Independence Day has seen a modification to its route as the National Commemoration Commission has announced that floats taking part in the event will now assemble at the Stabroek Market Square as opposed to Church Street. The Commission had sent out the advisory notifying those who are set to have their costume bands feature at the float parade that they will now be required to gather at the Stabroek Market Square after which the floats will move off East along Brickdam into the D’Urban Park. This is opposed to the recently adjusted route where costumes bands were assembling at the usual junction of Church and Camp Streets, after which they would’ve proceeded west along Church Street to Avenue of the Republic, south into Brickdam and then east along Brickdam, into D’Urban Park.Nonetheless, the provisions remain the same as it relates to students from schools along the route being relocated to other centres to sit their Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) and the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examinations (CAPE) on Independence Day.This float parade is anticipated to be the largest ever as it marks Guyana’s 50th anniversary as an independent nation. As a result of placing emphasis on this celebration, the usual Republic Day Float Parade had been postponed. Thus far, it has been reported that a number of ministries and private and public organisations, have gotten on board in having their floats be part of the grand celebration. With just two days to go, final touches are being made to the floats to have them ready for the road.Overseas support has been flowing as a number of persons from the Diaspora as well as tourists are flying into Guyana to be part of the monumental event. A number of activities to observe the celebration have occurred, but most persons are anticipating the Jubilee Float Parade set for Thursday.last_img

first_imgFORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – While a 7-0 score may appear as though things were a breeze for the Fort St. John Huskies against the Beaverlodge Blades on Saturday night, that was not in fact the case. Despite outshooting the Blades 30-15 through two periods of play the game remained scoreless, only to have Fort St. John explode for seven goals in the third period. The Huskies scored three times in just over an eight minute span to start the third and they kept the pressure on from there. They’d score a fourth marker with seven and a half minutes left in the period, and would score another three goals in the game’s final 2:26.Scoring for the Huskies were Brandon Howard (3), Wyatt Griffiths, Ryan McDonald, Kody Disher, and Lou Turnbull-Giesbrecht.- Advertisement -The win gives the Huskies six in their last eight games and improves their record to 15-14-0-0.Next on the team’s schedule is a game tomorrow night at home against the Dawson Creek Canucks at 8 p.m.last_img

first_imgRe: “Security agency objected to ports deal” (Feb. 26): Money is the mother’s milk of terrorism. Since 9-11, the United Arab Emirates has frozen al-Qaida-related bank accounts, given vital financial information to the United States and completely overhauled its banking system to exclude terrorist funding of any kind. As a result, al-Qaida is nearly bankrupt. The United Arab Emirates is more than just an ally. It is an active and vital participant in the War on Terror. To insult and rebuff the UAE based on mindless hysteria and misguided security concerns would be a dangerous mistake. – Bobbi Leigh Zito Porter Ranch AD Quality Auto 360p 720p 1080p Top articles1/5READ MORECasino Insider: Here’s a look at San Manuel’s new high limit rooms, Asian restaurant Bush assurances Re: “Security agency objected to ports deal” (Feb. 26): The administration that used its crack intelligence to give us so many assurances – that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction, that Iraq was an imminent threat to the USA, that Saddam Hussein was in concert with Osama bin Laden and that Iraq was attempting to buy uranium from Africa – has now assured us that its experts have sufficiently investigated the port security issue and have given the go-ahead to turn that security over to a Middle Eastern country. The “experts” are clearly anything but. – Denis FeehanSimi Valley Bush mantra Re: “Security agency objected to ports deal” (Feb. 26): When terrorists blew off the golden dome of the Shiite Askariya Shrine, it touched off violence that claimed the lives of at least 140 people in just a couple of days. While this was happening, an international business deal was set in motion to allow Dubai Ports World, owned by the United Arab Emirates, to become a major player in cargo shipments to U.S. ports. And George W. Bush sees nothing wrong with this? Bush’s mantra truly must be “Oil barons of the world, unite.” – Adam Platts Northridge Perfect political storm Finally, in an election year yet, a political issue of no consequence that Democrat zealots and waffling Republicans can embrace with full venom and vigor: The Arabs are coming, the Arabs are coming; please run from the docks. What’s that you say? The Chinese already own 80 percent of operations at L.A. docks? Wait. You mean even if the ports are sold to the Dubai interests, the same Americans will be doing the work, and the safety and security are still under the auspices of the Coast Guard and the Department of Homeland Security? We don’t actually even believe there is a War on Terror, so please give us this “issue.” We desperately need something to show the American people we care about them. – Roger Olsen Burbank Baring all Re: “Baring all for Vanity” (U section, Feb. 26): The article discussing the cover of Vanity Fair magazine in the U section was right on target. I agree with the premise that sexual politics is very alive in the Hollywood image factory. I would also add that I am a senior citizen and have never even opened the cover of a Vanity Fair, but two weeks ago I purchased one off the rack precisely because of Tom Ford’s Hollywood section included in the issue. I think that the marketing strategy of Graydon Carter and Tom Ford is exactly what the public finds interesting. I think that this is a wonderful idea. Since she is being termed out, there is no doubt in my mind that she would run for another public office, most likely in the state Senate, and she would win the election. She would continue to cause damage to the whole state, just as she did for the last five years. However, if she replaced Roy Romer, the damage would be limited to Los Angeles and its youngest population. Moreover, since the way the Los Angeles Unified School District is run already belongs on top of Sunshine Canyon, the damage would not be noticeable. – Victor Swiecicki Canyon Country Dumbed-down society Re: “Goldberg to head LAUSD?” (Feb. 21): From what I can see, the evidence suggests that Jackie Goldberg is one of the few politicians who has had an influence on California education. The fact that anyone would even consider her for the position of superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District speaks for itself: We are living in a seriously dumbed-down society. – John S. Soet Burbank Algebra is important Re: “Schools should be more than college precursor” (Viewpoint, Feb.17): Why does everybody have to study algebra? Because algebra teaches problem-solving. It shows students that difficult problems can be broken down into steps. Execute each step, and the problem is solved. It also teaches that problems can be solved several ways. One must choose the best method. These are everyday skills. If people shouldn’t bother with algebra if they don’t use algebra every day, then basketball players shouldn’t lift weights because all they have to lift is a basketball, and NASCAR drivers shouldn’t keep in shape because all they do is sit. Students in the Antelope Valley District also have to take a geometry class because geometry teaches logic. We aim higher. – Jerry P. Concha Sylmar Galpin freeways Galpin Ford advertises that it’s the No. 1 volume Ford dealership in the world and has sold more cars and trucks than the combined Ford dealerships in 12 separate states. Our overcrowded freeways certainly confirm this claim, as Los Angeles has had the worst traffic conditions in the nation for the past 18 years. Since Galpin’s business has been first at moving more cars out of its showroom, and our government agencies have been consistently last at moving more cars down our freeways, maybe Galpin should be in charge of rebuilding the Los Angeles-area freeway system and return it to being No. 1 again. Just don’t let government sell cars for Galpin; otherwise Galpin will end up with the worst sales record in the world. – Robert L. Rosebrock Brentwood It’s the trucks Sitting in yet another freeway traffic jam today, and watching all the cars speed by in the diamond lane, I couldn’t help noticing the incredible number of trucks that were clogging up the freeway. I believe it is the trucks that cause the traffic jams. Why don’t we turn the diamond lane into a trucks-only lane and require all trucks to use that lane, clearing the the other lanes to accommodate more automobiles and thus facilitating more traffic flow. We could give the truckers a higher speed limit, say 85 mph, since they would not have to worry about some moron in a car cutting in front of them and causing an accident. I think this would be much easier and cheaper than building or expanding more freeways. – Gary Haskins Eagle Rock Accidents happen With all of the negativity about the Cheney shooting, how refreshing to read “His humanity” (Your Opinions, Feb. 19), Don Culp’s humane letter in which he describes the shooting as “only a tragic accident,” which is truly all it was. After all, accidents occur every day, and Adlai E. Stevenson accidentally killed his best friend in their youth when he was either cleaning or loading a shotgun. – Eddie Cress Sylmar Silly, silly question Answering the big question about Vice President Cheney and his lack of service in Vietnam, despite his love of hunting: Those being hunted by U.S. forces in Vietnam quite often shot back, unlike most pheasants or lawyers in Texas. – Michael Smith (Vietnam Veteran) Tarzana 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong.
