It has planning permission to move out of its Rutherglen bakery in Glasgow to a new multi-million pound bakery 2.5 miles away on the Clydesmill industrial estate in Cambuslang.Construction work on the new bakery is due to start before the end of the year and the move to Cambuslang is scheduled for late 2007. The 340 staff employed at the site are expected to transfer to the new facility.Greggs of Scotland MD Raymond Reynolds said South Lanarkshire Council has just granted Greggs planning permission for the new factory. He told British Baker: “The move will allow us to add capacity while improving our standards and efficiencies. The greater capacity offered by this new bakery will mean we can open more shops both locally and across central Scotland.” He added: “We always look for sites that are close to our current operations as the needs of our employees are a key priority.”Newcastle-based Greggs is the UK’s largest bakery retail chain with 1,331 stores.
