Swift Current Broncos pick Nelson’s Curt Doyle in Bantam Draft

first_imgNelson’s Curt Doyle spent the past season tending goal for the Kamloops Jardine Blazers. The move appears to have paid instant dividends as the Heritage City product caught the eye of the Western Hockey League’s Swift Current Broncos, who drafted the 15-year-old goalie in the ninth round (188th overall) in last week’s Bantam Draft.“This is a real exciting time,” Doyle said from his parent’s home in Nelson. “I’m really excited . . . this is just a real good feeling but I’m also pretty surprised to be honest.”Like many other 15-year-old hockey products, Doyle was watching the draft play out when his name came up during the Broncos ninth round selection.About an hour later the chief scout for Swift Current called Doyle to welcome him to the WHL club via telephone. Doyle began playing the sport in Nelson Minor Hockey at the age of five, moving into the goal full time during his second year of Atom.He played two seasons each with the Peewee and Bantam Rep teams before moving this past year to Kamloops to play with the Jardine Blazers. The 5’11”, 155-pound, Doyle finished the season with a 24-4 record and six shutouts. The Jardine Blazers won the Okanagan League with a 12-0-1 record.Doyle plans to move back to Nelson to compete for a spot on the Kootenay Ice Major Midget Hockey Club this coming season with an eye on the Broncos in the future.”The BC Major Midget Hockey League is a very good program for developing players,” Doyle said. But first the Heritage City product is expecting a package from the WHL club to arrive soon that will hopefully include an invitation to rookie camp.“I’ve always had an interest in college and Tier I hockey, but I’m leaning toward the WHL which has always been a goal of mine to make it there,” Doyle said.last_img read more

Praise for Sterling after Man City win

first_imgRaheem Sterling received fulsome praise from Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola after starring in the team’s 5-0 Champions League win away to Steaua Bucharest. The 21-year-old from Harlesden set up two of the goals and was also fouled for a penalty, missed by Sergio Aguero.Although he scored 11 goals in 46 appearances in his first season at City, following a £47m move from Liverpool, Sterling had found himself out of the team towards the end of the campaign and put in subdued performances for England during Euro 2016.But he answered his critics with a masterful performance in Romania – and Guardiola was very impressed.Speaking to BT Sport, the ex-Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss said: “He’s a fantastic player. That’s why Manchester City were so clever to buy him last season.“He has a lot of quality – he’s fast, has a good work ethic, can play right or left, go out to the line or go in the middle. But he’s young and has to learn a lot.”Sterling, who began his career in QPR’s academy, added: “It’s been a good start to the season so far for me, but most importantly it’s two games and two wins.“I’ve come back with a good mentality. I just want to play football.”See also:Transfer gossip: Sterling fears for his City future, Mirror saySterling named player of the monthFollow West London Sport on TwitterFind us on Facebooklast_img read more

Take a Mystery Ghost Bus Tour

first_img24 April 2003In 2001, South African born illusionist Mark Rose-Christie brought the concepts of the London Ghost Bus and Jack The Ripper tours to South Africa. Now the The Mystery Ghost Bus Tour has gone national – climb on board and get into the spirit of SA’s own ghouls, haunts, phantoms, famous murders and other paranormal delights. Sceptics welcome!Opening at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown, The Mystery Ghost Bus Tour was an immediate sell-out success. By the time it re-ran with a new itinerary at the 2002 festival, Die Burger and the Herald hailed the tours as “Top Seller and Top Attraction” at the festival. The tours then opened countrywide: they have run to full buses in Johannesburg, have had additional buses running in Pretoria, and will soon be running in the Midlands Meander in KwaZulu-Natal, Port Elizabeth, the Garden Route. The buses run all-year round on a regular basis, except for Cape Town, which has been “a bit slow”, says Rose-Christie, partly due to the lack of guides there. To redress this, Rose-Christie hosted two tours in Cape Town last year, and will be training new guides to help boost the tours in the province.Ghost encountersThe tours include ghost encounters that would have had ghost author Eric Rosenthal scared out of his wits, mysteries that even writer Lawrence Green would have sought out, murders that Benjamin Bennett would have “killed for”, plus legends and other paranormal phenomena.Well-researched, all accounts are based on actual case studies, police reports, research documents, various “X-files” and other sources. Being a scientist as well as an entertainer, Rose-Christie adds parapsychology and paranormal research to the tour, and promises to turn the most hardened sceptic into a believer.Quantum physics tells us that energy is “never created, never destroyed, only transferred”. It is this “transference” that Rose-Christie deals with on the tours, going on to explain the difference between Replay, Interactive, Crisis, Doppelganger, Poltergeist and Vardoger type ghosts. In an interactive segment of the tour, audiences try out dowsing rods to verify the existence of unseen energies and force fields, which only serves to heighten the expectation of the unseen that will greet them at the end of the tour . in a cemetery.Added to this are murder mock-ups, with models of the bloody victims of many a famous South African murder, including those of poison murderess Daisy de Melcker, scissors murderess Marlene Lehnberg, and the Hangman affair of Pretoria. There is “haunting” music on the bus, live dramatic recordings, and actuality recordings which include the voice of the officer who investigated the notorious Uniondale Hitchhiker affair. And it’s not just a bus ride – one enters haunted pubs, a haunted room and a cemetery with suitable surprise scares, and there are few pubs stops to calm one’s n-e-r-ves. On other occasions one visits the eerie exteriors of haunts, some of which are way out in the dark countryside. It’s a full evening’s worth of “info-tainment”, with a bit of something for everyone. What is a podcast and how do I use it?

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest Alas, we live in a digital world these days. Be it the smartphones in our pockets, the vehicles we drive, or the computers we depend on daily — digital is here and here to stay. Along with that are some exciting new forms of media. We here at Ohio Ag Net recently started a podcast ourselves talking the latest issues in agriculture, featuring those from all corners of the industry.Podcasts really are great ways to deliver information to more people across the internet, in addition to the more traditional form of broadcast communication. However, we realize not everyone is familiar with the world of podcasts. This blog will look to give a quick introduction on how to best utilize them. What is a podcast?A podcast is a piece of digital audio that’s distributed across the internet, available for downloading to a computer or mobile device. They can range in topic and length depending on the creator.Where can I find a podcast and how do I tune in?The foremost resource for listening to podcast is iTunes from Apple. In fact, the name ‘podcast’ comes from the fact that the media type was coined by Apple for its extremely popular iPods in the early 2000s.There are multiple ways to listen to various podcasts, but we recommend venturing to iTunes and their podcasting app. From there, search for Ohio Ag Net and find our podcast channel. Hitting the subscribe option will make sure you follow the podcast for each update in the future. A download feature is also available so they can be easily listened to when the phone or computer is not connected to the internet. With podcasts being on-demand forms of media, this means old episodes are always up for listening. If you’re late to the podcast scene, no worries — you can jump in from episode one or just start listening to the latest addition. For those without iPhones or Apple products on hand, popular smartphone apps for listening include Pocket Casts, Stitcher Radio, or Google Play Music. In addition to these apps, the Ohio Ag Net Podcast can easily be listened to on our website as well, posted every Wednesday evening. When do I listen?Easy answer — any time! Podcasts are made for flexibility and enjoyment for everyone everywhere. Listen in the cab of a tractor, the drive to work, or when you’re sitting at home. They’re on demand and, if downloaded to your listening device, ready at anytime, no matter the internet connection. But why?Podcasts range in size and scope from quick news updates that last five minutes, to longer, more in-depth audio documentaries that last a couple hours. It’s a big world and will take some time to find the best podcasts for your listening habits. Each podcast episode, no matter the “station” has its own typed out description so the searching listener can get a quick idea of what’s in store. Don’t like the description? No need to listen. Get out there and start looking!Keep in mind that some podcasts have an “E” beside their name. This means they are explicit in nature, containing adult language/content.Why should I listen to the Ohio Ag Net Podcast?Ohio Ag Net and Ohio’s Country Journal focuses much of our work on the broadcasting and writing of news stories, with opinion pieces from time to time. The format of podcasting allows the team to take a more relaxed approach to telling the story of agriculture, looking at the latest happenings across ag and the world in general. It’s a more informal look at the industry, and gives an in-depth look at a number of issues we cover throughout the year. The length usually varies from half an hour to an entire 60 minutes, depending on the topics covered each week. It’s a bit more personality mixed with fun and adventure, all wrapped around the stories in agriculture that matter.Overall, we continue to provide the same news coverage that we’re known for with the addition of our podcast. We hope you tune in and enjoy!last_img read more

Lead Generation for a Thought Leadership Authority – Blogs, Books, Speaking, Podcasts and eBooks

first_img Originally published Oct 19, 2007 12:11:00 PM, updated March 21 2013 Blogging I recently watched a presentation from Brian Carroll, author of Lead Generation for the Complex Sale and author of a blog called the B2B Lead Generation Blog. His presentation was quite interesting and he had these 5 suggestions for tactics to use for lead generation for a company that is trying to build thought leadership or become an authority.1) Blog.  Brian has been blogging for a year and thinks it is one of the most effective ways to get his ideas out there.  He posts 1 to 3 times per week spending an average of 2 hours per week in his blog.  I agree that this is a great technique to get your message out into the market – that’s why we at HubSpot started this blog!2) Speak.  Speaking opportunities are often overlooked as a marketing tactic, especially speaking at smaller events.  Brian likes the personal connection and says that he gets a lot more leads from in person events than web-based events.  Brian likes to speak 2 to 4 times per month.  the great news is that while preparing for one speaking opportunity can take a lot of time, if you can re-use the same presentation, you can get a lot of leverage out of your time.3) Book. Writing a book is a lot of work, and does very little to generate leads now.  But, a book is a great way to show people that you are a thought leader.  Seth Godin says that “a book is a souvenir of the ideas.”  So, don’t think about the book as a way to promote your ideas, but it is a great way to validate them and make them credible.  Finally, some interesting facts: according to some book researchers, 90% of nonfiction books sell less than 5000 copies, and it takes at least 5000 copies to make a thought leadership impact in the market.  Brian sees the book as a useful sales tool because it provides a lot of credibility and is a great leave behind for your salespeople.4) Podcast.  Brian does a Podcast once a month.  He does not think it is a great lead generation tool, he only has a couple hundred subscribers.  But, it is great for branding, because his data shows that when people do listen to podcasts, they really pay attention to them and tend to do it while driving or working out, and focus a fair amount on the content.5) eBook.  Brian defines an eBook as a “hipper version of whitepapers” (David Meerman Scott agrees).  eBooks are similar to whitepapers, but are typically more graphical and usually do not require registration.Does your company do any thought leadership?  Do you want to serve as an authority in your market?  What techniques do you use for marketing and lead generation below?  Leave a comment below.
